Yes, it’s that time of the year again. The staff and students can see the Christmas holidays are just around the corner and we are all looking forward to the celebrations that they will bring. However, we also know the season of Advent is more than just shopping, eating and presents. If you’re not sure what we mean watch this video and you’ll see what we’re focussing on this week.
As part of our advent preparations we’ve begun our food drive for the Forge. The Forge is the local homeless centre here in Scunthorpe and it provides shelter and refuge for many people in Scunthorpe who would not get regular hot meals without their support. Each year during Advent we join together as a school to collect food, toiletries, hats, scarves and gloves to take to the Forge. This year some tutor groups have started ‘reverse advent calendars’ so instead of eating chocolate every day they are bringing items in for hampers for the Forge instead. We’ll let you know how we get on towards the end of this term.
Something else we are undertaking this week are Advent Calendars of Kindness. In many of our tutor rooms you’ll find chocolate advent calendars being opened every day (fairtrade ones of course) but in every tutor room you’ll also find one of these.
We’re all trying to do acts of kindness every day during advent as a little extra to help make this festive period special, focussing on giving rather than receiving. Perhaps this week you too could write your own advent calendar of kindness.
And that was the week that was here at St Bede’s. We’re signing off for Christmas now (even though we still have two weeks at school) so we can focus on our preparations for the Community Carol Service, the in school liturgy and some community carol singing events we have lined up. We hope you have a lovely advent a peaceful Christmas and a joyous new year. See you in 2017!!!
